“The Pelagromage”, (a portmanteau of “Archipelago” & “Pilgrimage”) is about a Posthuman journey of perspective to Hilbre Island. The 1:100 conceptual landscape transect model, communicates the unique character of the undulating sandstone topography of the island, set within the fluctuating tide of the Dee Estuary. The transect is inspired from the northern corner of Hilbre Island, featuring the existing lifeboat ramp where the land meets the water and skyline. The model is focused on habitat enhancement, resilient coastal planting, and working with nature to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. Though rich in history and wildlife, the site is vulnerable to rising sea levels, increased storm surges eroding cliff faces, as well as dense numbers of human visitors over-trampling vegetation and causing disruption to roosting birds. These are also all themes woven within the model. The model development deepened my empathy towards material choices within the planting and hardscape plans. It helped push my initial ideas into an innovative new direction.

The design began with sketches and plan drawings, to understand how the core meaning of the project can connect with the audience the most. Then paper models of the intertidal floating islands and clay organically evolved into mixed media iterations without being too precious about the outcome too soon. I developed the overall model transect through Rhino, Grasshopper and then from topography data cut the base using the CNC machine. This was important to capture the essence of the cliffs and geology. To reduce waste, I used an array of recycled materials. Recycled blocks of plywood symbolised currents, re-cycled MDF for sandstone, recycled 3mm MDF sheets acted as the support of sandstone walls, and re-cycled plaster pieces were placed within mesh wire sheets acting as gabions. Jesmonite was painted over the wall structures for added texture and atmosphere.“
