Inspiration from Luke Ferguson: ‘’Modelling w Inspiration from Luke Ferguson:

‘’Modelling was a crucial part of the design process to test materials for the façade design, tectonic details and material selection. It helped refine the ornamentation of the project, developing a language which was specific to the function, grounded within Crewe. The project explored the transfer of intangible heritage through the process of made artefacts within workshop and gallery spaces, embodied within the project through the language of the confluence,[...]
First the panels were digitally modelled then cut into MDF using a CNC machine. Casts were tested at 1:50 and 1:5 to test materials,[...]

The final 1:50 model allowed the testing of the connection between the existing masonry wall, timber roof and façade system. Furthermore, it allowed the testing of the glulam frame which the ceramic cladding would be attached to.

A motif was extracted from historical imagery of Crewe Works, which was combined with the language of the conflux to form this ceramic cladding. Tests were conducted to explore the material options, such as terrazzo or concrete.’’
