‘1:50 Scale Structural analysis model of the Car ‘1:50 Scale Structural analysis model of the Carina Store in Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan by Kazuyo Sejima’

“This model was used to explore the load paths and bearing structure of the building through the use of columns, cross bracing and primary & secondary beams. The technical documents had only provided two of the four elevations, as well as no indication of the placement of slabs in plan leaving some guesswork in determining the placement of the bracing.

By using laser cut MDF pieces that slotted together, we were able to simulate the spanning of secondary and primary beams and how they join to columns and slabs. The columns that were originally narrow RHS (Rectangular Hollow Sections) were exaggerated to emphasise the load magnitude passed through the columns and for visual clarity purposes. The model was laser cut with the intention to be cut entirely from one 800 x 400mm sheet of 3mm Plywood. As well as exploring the structure, the understanding of how light interacts with the mesh façade and the shadows it casts in and around the building was an aspect that fascinated the both of us.”
