As the city grew it became the global centre of finance, industrial capitalism, and the British Empire. New buildings, urban spaces, and networks of infrastructure were demanded, constructed, and rebuilt. Models were a crucial medium of communication that enabled archi\u00adtects, politicians, and the wider public to conceive the city\u2019s expansion of buildings and spaces. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">Based on extensive research in archives, museums, and period publications,\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;\">Modelling the Metropolis\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">addresses not just architectural models but also an eclectic range of images and objects \u2013 from technical products to sculptures, diagrams to engravings, maps to photographs \u2013 that dramatize the politics and aesthetics of Victorian London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msa.ac.uk\/staff\/mwells\/\">Dr. Wells is a member of the Manchester Architectural Research Group here at MSA.<\/a>The event will comprise of a summary of the new book followed by a Q&amp;A session with Dr. Wells.<\/p>\n<p>Agenda:<\/p>\n<p>17.30 &#8211; Lecture in Room G33 Humanities Bridgeford Street<\/p>\n<p>18.15 &#8211; Q&amp;A<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/modelling-the-metropolis-the-architectural-model-in-victorian-london-tickets-568058316717\">To attend please register via eventbrite by clicking here!\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We look forward to seeing you there!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re pleased to announce the book launch event for &#8216;Modelling the Metropolis: The Architectural Model in Victorian London&#8217; by Dr. Matthew Wells.
